Would you prefer to have open boarders that would let anyone and everyone... including the unskilled and perhaps criminals, just mosey on in and burden our system further? Of course, some would work hard and contribute to society in a positive manner. But to assume they all would is a fantasy. posted by: TaBooTenente (reply) post date: 12.29.04 (2:59 pm) Reply to: lawngnome There's nothing wrong with legal immigration. You can immigrate easily if you have several family members, if an employer requests your relocation, if you are a student with a visa and folow procedures. however, the border policies have tightened recently, and many immigrants from countries with negligent governments. many have families. many are hungry and have no work. many cannot speak english. many cannot wait. the numbers of unskilled, or criminal illegal immigrants is a nonsense figure. while many non-english speakers cannot obtain work as easily as others, they are overqualified for the base jobs offered to them. often, people like to point to 30billion dollar short-term deficit created by illegel immigrants. this figure is also an illusion. hang on, and i'll show you why: american history consists of wave after wave of immigration, from everywhere. everyone here in this country (minus native americans) has immigrated. immigration laws have recently (35yrs) tightened, and certain nationals had nearly impossible flowcharts to navigate: citizens of the ex-soviet bloc and mexicans have had the worst of it. soviets trickled into our country (ex-doctors, scientists of various stripes, professors, artists and more slowly were able to find passage here, often by way of a sympathetic string puller. of course their degrees were never recognized; were useless; and many did not speak any english but worked anyway, worked any way that was available to them. the "drain" on the economy was basically the same, maintaining the ratio, but these same immigrants are now active, productive patriots. so where's the problem, you ask. the problem is that the mexican government cannot support a large poor, unemployed, uninsured population, nor does it have a strong interest in curtailing the immigration. these "mosey-ers" are not criminals running from the law; they are parents desperate to feed their families. this number, 30 billion, seems like a large number, but it is smaller than any other "investment" deficit usa acrues, and history demonstrates the productivity of similar "investments". if someone can't wait to immigrate, and they make it past the looney vigilantes killing desperate human beings in the desert, and find ways to feed their families. . .well, let's just say that i'm willing to wait for a return on my taxes. --TBT |
